Heat ?
BroadviewHouse is heated
with a large boiler and steam radiators. The boiler produces steam, the
steam rises up through the pipes attached to the radiators. As the steam
fills the pipes it pushes the air in the pipes out through the small holes
in the valves on the radiators . The valves have an adjustable cap that
determines how fast the air can escape which allows the steam to fill and
heat the radiator.
Look for the arrow on the side of the valve, loosen the
cap nut and adjust the arrow to the desired numerical setting. "Six" is
the warmest. "One" will shut it down. Do not over tighten the cap nut,
finger tight will work .
Do not use the large valve at
the floor for heat
control, it is for
service
only.
see diagram below
Because it takes a few cycles to warm
up the entire system in the fall there is a period of time when some rooms
are cooler. Open the transom to allow warmer
air from the house into your room. The rooms with ceiling
fans can pull the warm air off the ceiling by switching the fans direction
so that it blows air up, forcing the warm air back down the walls to the
floor level (we have electric heaters if really needed, just ask,
but your window better be closed at all times,
or we take the heater back !$!$! )
Do not adjust the thermostat, you
will make it to hot for other people in the house.
If your room is too hot, check the thermostat. It should
be just under 68 degrees. If thermostat is set correctly, then close down
the radiator valve a number or two. Further trouble? .. ask
us
Please watch the joints around the large service valves
and report any leaks or drips.
